Button Flower Magnets

Button Flower Magnets! I have always been fascinated with buttons, so it wasn’t hard to come up with the idea of the Button Flower Magnet. This fascination has led to a growing collection of mostly antique buttons and I’ve been collecting them for what seems like forever. And with so many I had to do something with them.

  • Pencil & paper
  • Various buttons (preferably 2 hole, or even one)

  • Magnets
  • Piece of cardboard (can reuse kleenex boxes before discarding)
  • Needle & thread

For these Button Flower Magnets, start by making or drawing 4 flowers that would fit inside each other, like those russian dolls. See example on the left;

Next, cut out the flowers from the paper drawings. Then trace around each flower on the thin cardboard. And finally, cut flowers out of the cardboard. Now these are your templates to use going forward and should last a while. I used a little tape to secure the paper cut outs on the cardboard. (made it easier to deal with.)

Now, check out your scraps of fabric. Using different fabrics will make these flowers really pop. (as you can see from my pictures.) You can use different patterns mixed with solid colors as well as different textures. Just mix and match and have fun with it! {If you don’t have other projects to get fabric from, you can also get fabric in what they call fat quarters from your local department or craft store. Sometimes they even sell end of bolt scraps, usually for just a few dollars.}

Easy Drawing

Let’s start on the wrong side of the fabric or the opposite side you want to show. Grab one of your template flowers and trace around it with a pencil. You can use a marker if it traces better for you. Once you trace each flower part to a different fabric and cut out. Now your ready to cut them all out.

Easy Sewing

Okay, your doing great! Now, place your all your pieces (flowers) together. Start with the largest, on the bottom, first. Pick out the button you want to use next. You’ll usually want one with some color that you have in the fabric. Great, you are now ready to sew the button onto the layers of fabric, in the middle. Start with stitching from the back and ending there and tying off.

Easy Gluing

After the button is sewn on to the layers, your ready to glue on the magnet with your glue gun. Let the glue fully dry before trying out the magnet. You have now completed your first beautiful Button Flower Magnet. Use and enjoy, make more for family and friends even.
